Wine Tasting, Live music, Dancing, Food, Games, Hayrides, and of course: Grape stomping! For what we thought it may have turned out as a partly cloudy, breezy and slightly chilly day, it turned out to be a great day for an outing.
As we’ve been doing for the last three years, Benmarl Winery was our destination once again this October 11th, 2009. Benmarl is the oldest continuously operated vineyard in eastern America and probably the oldest in the United States. Because of its unique microclimate, Benmarl has been able to produce some of America’s most outstanding wines that have been enthusiastically received by a wide group of connoisseurs and professional wine experts.
A recent sojourn up the Hudson River, has served to remind me that California is not alone in the production of outstanding wines. Since 1971, the Miller family has been slowly building a reputation and a loyal following for its quite remarkable line of wines. In my opinion, their star wine is the Baco Noir, originally developed in the Armagnac region of Bordeaux by François Baco. A medium body wine, with hints of plum, raspberry and cranberry in the nose and finish. Intense dark fruit interlaced with toasty vanilla. The tannins are firm and rich leading to a lingering finish. The wine is excellent upon release but turns from excellent to outstanding after you lay it down a couple of years.
